CPAP Troubleshoot: Why is my CPAP so noisy?

Out of all of the reasons CPAP patients come to us for repairs, excessive noise is the most frequent. Some people describe this noise as a whistling, wheezing, whining or humming sound. Sometimes it’s consistently noisy throughout the night, and for others it gets louder as the device ramps up. One person even described it to us recently as a “giggling” noise.

If your CPAP device is noisier than normal, it might be keeping you from falling asleep or waking you up at night, or perhaps it’s something that only your bed partner has noticed. Either way, excessive noise could a sign that there’s a problem with your CPAP device.

Here are some tips for dealing with a noisy CPAP:

  • Check mask fit: The first thing to rule out is always an issue with mask fit. If you suspect a problem with your mask fit, or if your device is indicating poor mask fit, a chat with your respiratory therapist or home medical equipment supplier is the best place to start.

  • Tubing and filters: If mask fit isn’t the issue, check for some other potential causes of noise next. There could be a hole in your tube so check it thoroughly or, if it’s been a few months, replace it with a new one and make sure it’s securely attached. Check also to make sure your filters are seated directly and are clean; when filters are dirty, the machine has to work harder to deliver proper flow and can get noisier. If you have a current CPAP prescription, your insurance company may cover regular resupply of these items.

  • Wear or damage to the blower: If you’ve tried everything and your CPAP device is still noisy, there’s likely an issue with the blower. Take some notes on what the noise sounds like and when it occurs.
